Living in Alaska means that every November I put the frozen Thanksgiving turkey on the deck, because, as you can guess, it’s COLD out there! BUT, this year, after 2 weeks, I realized that it had been thawing for 3-4 days because we had a “Heat wave” of 34-37 degrees F.. Sooo, Monday I put that thing in a roasting bag, (The fastest and easiest way to cook turkey) and 3 hours later it was smelling mighty nice in our house. I pulled all the meat off the bones, froze some and the giblets for gravy next week, made soup, fixed rice with turkey broth and was feeling very satisfied! It was great being Susie Homemaker, but then 2 teens wanted me to go with them to the store to get white bread, ( I only buy healthy bread.) lettuce and tomatoes for sandwiches.
Wait. What? Good idea, but keep in mind that I already had been to the store at least 2-3 times that week, we have a ton of food in the fridge, pantry, freezer and in the basement, I had happily “slaved” in the kitchen for hours, and I had had a busy day with other things like errands already. These girls are not demanding, and they understood, but I still have good old fashioned guilt sometimes, and while it’s false guilt it still felt bad, so I quickly and easily put ingredients in the bread machine for French bread. Now the house smelled really nice. But later, everyone including us, their dad and their 2 little sisters devoured the fresh bread, so there were no sandwiches. Lol! But that was ok with me.
The next day I made another loaf, which is lasting longer, but guess what? While i HAD gone to the store to get another Turkey, we had forgotten to get lettuce for sandwiches. Figures!
Remind me next year not to use my deck freezer, or to be a turkey and feel guilty ok? Having 2 turkeys in one week is plenty, and I don’t need a second helping of guilt.
Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy the day, with or without turkey. They are probably grateful if you are vegan or vegetarian! 🙂
