Years ago, when parenting teens, when they came to us with last minute requests like spending the night at a friends, I always said “Hold on, I need at least 2 days notice.” And I see now that was because we had 6-7 kids at the time, with busy school, sports, dance, gymnastics, scouts etc, and I just couldn’t handle one more thing added, at least most of the time!
Now I (we) are so mellow, most of the time I say sure, or probably, or let me think for a few minutes. If their schoolwork is being handled etc., there is no reason to say no. Of course I may say, after you pick up the damp towels in your room, or take the dirty dishes out of your room, or please clean up your bathroom, but normally I am wayyyy more flexible than I used to be.
It’s a joy to have both me and hubby go with the flow with these teen girls! Heck, even with the 8 and 6 year old granddaughters when they come over, we can keep up with their energy most of the time and be very spontaneous. Try it sometime! It’s very freeing. Let us know how it goes. š
